A cholera outbreak in Borno State has claimed more than 40 lives and infected over 3,000 people across 139 communities in seven local government areas, according to reports.
The affected local government areas include Maiduguri, Jere, Mafa, Konduga, Monguno, Ngala and Magumeri. Health authorities said the outbreak was recorded between May 1 and May 28, with cases continuing to rise in several communities.
Maiduguri and Jere have emerged as the worst-hit areas, accounting for the majority of reported infections. Health facilities in the affected communities are reportedly overwhelmed as they struggle to cope with the growing number of patients seeking treatment.
Medical personnel say cholera is spreading rapidly due to poor sanitation, contaminated water sources and open defecation in some communities. Residents have also reported that several victims died before reaching treatment centres.
The Borno State Government has intensified efforts to contain the outbreak by distributing drugs, medical consumables and hygiene materials to treatment centres. Emergency response teams have also been deployed to affected communities to provide medical support and public health education.
Governor Babagana Zulum has directed the procurement of additional medical supplies and emergency materials to support healthcare facilities managing cholera patients across the state.
Health officials have urged residents to maintain proper hygiene, drink safe water, wash their hands regularly and seek immediate medical attention when symptoms such as severe diarrhoea and vomiting occur.
The state government, in collaboration with health agencies and traditional leaders, has launched awareness campaigns aimed at preventing further spread of the disease.
