Arsenal Lose in Dramatic Final
Nwankwo Kanu still holds the record as the youngest winner of the UEFA Champions League. As a result, Arsenal’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest kept that record untouched.
PSG won 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the Puskás Aréna. Unfortunately for Arsenal, Gabriel Magalhães missed the final penalty. Consequently, the club missed out on their first European title.
Because of this result, no new record was set. Arsenal had hoped to see history rewritten through their young players.
Max Dowman’s Big Stage Moment
Meanwhile, Arsenal included 16-year-old Max Dowman on the bench. The teenager has already built a strong reputation in European football.
In fact, Dowman became the youngest player to appear in the Champions League earlier in his career. He also made headlines after becoming the youngest Premier League goalscorer against Everton.
Had Arsenal won, he might have challenged Kanu’s long-standing record. However, he remained unused as the match slipped away.
Kanu’s Breakthrough in 1995
To understand the record, one must go back to 24 May 1995. On that day, Kanu won the Champions League with Ajax in Vienna at 18 years and 296 days.
Earlier, he joined Ajax from Iwuanyanwu Nationale in 1993. This move followed his standout performance at the 1993 U-17 World Cup in Japan. There, he scored five goals and helped Nigeria win the trophy.
Ajax’s Golden Generation
At that time, Ajax built one of the strongest young squads in football history. Under Louis van Gaal, the team included stars like Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids, Marc Overmars, Patrick Kluivert, and Finidi George.
As a result, Ajax dominated the 1994/95 season. They won both the Dutch league and the Champions League without losing a single game.
In addition, Kanu played an important role throughout the campaign. He scored 12 goals across all competitions.
During the quarter-final, he scored against Hajduk Split to help secure a 3-0 win. Later, he also appeared in the semi-final against Bayern Munich, where Ajax won 5-2.
The 1995 Final in Vienna
In the final against AC Milan, Kanu came off the bench in the second half. He tried to influence the game and push Ajax forward.
Eventually, Patrick Kluivert scored the decisive goal in the 85th minute. Because of that goal, Ajax lifted the trophy that night.
Interestingly, Kluivert, Seedorf, and Kanu still rank among the youngest Champions League winners in history.
Record Still Unbroken
Today, Max Dowman represents the next wave of talent in European football. He continues to break age-related records.
However, Kanu’s milestone remains untouched. Even after more than three decades, no player has managed to surpass it.
