A 19-year-old automotive enthusiast from Katsina State, Ishaq Jamilu, has gained international recognition for an innovative electric vehicle concept designed with affordability, efficiency and practicality in mind.
Jamilu, who grew up in Kusada Local Government Area, said his design was featured by the International Art Magazine Japan, which praised the concept for its affordability and efficiency.
He disclosed the recognition in Katsina on Monday, August 17, 2026, describing the development as an encouragement to pursue his ambition in automotive design.
Jamilu said his interest in automobiles began at an early age and developed through self-learning, internet research, technical drawing, 3D modelling and practical experience.
According to him, his experience working as a mechanic has also helped him understand how automotive concepts can be developed into practical and functional vehicles.
“I have always been passionate about automobiles. I started learning by myself through the internet, studying vehicle designs and practising through drawings and 3D modelling.”
He said his practical experience has allowed him to combine theoretical knowledge with hands-on understanding of vehicle development.
Jamilu explained that his electric vehicle concept is designed to make mobility more affordable while maintaining performance, durability and efficiency.
The design features a compact body, efficient use of space and energy-saving elements.
For the young innovator, the project is not only about designing a vehicle but also about exploring how technology can contribute to more affordable and environmentally friendly transportation.
He said he was surprised that a project developed through self-learning in Katsina attracted the attention of an international publication in Japan.
“The recognition has encouraged me to work harder, improve my skills and pursue my dream in automotive design.”
Jamilu said the international recognition has strengthened his ambition to pursue formal education in automotive design.
He wants to contribute to the development of vehicles that are affordable, efficient and environmentally friendly.
His journey also highlights how young people can use online resources and practical experience to develop technical skills outside traditional educational pathways.
However, Jamilu said access to proper training, mentorship and modern equipment would help young innovators take their ideas further.
The Katsina-based innovator appealed to government agencies and private organisations to provide greater support for young Nigerians working on innovative ideas.
He called for opportunities in training, mentorship and access to modern equipment.
According to Jamilu, many young Nigerians have innovative ideas but lack the resources and support needed to turn those ideas into practical solutions.
“With the right opportunities and support, young Nigerians can develop innovations that will attract international attention.”
Jamilu’s electric vehicle concept comes at a time when innovation in mobility and cleaner transportation is attracting growing global attention.
For Nigeria, supporting young people interested in automotive technology could help develop local technical skills and encourage more home-grown solutions.
For the 19-year-old from Katsina, however, the international recognition represents only another step in a much longer journey.
His goal remains to gain more knowledge, improve his designs and eventually contribute to the development of affordable and environmentally friendly vehicles.
From self-learning in Katsina to recognition in Japan, Ishaq Jamilu’s journey shows the potential of young Nigerian innovators when passion, technical skills and opportunity come together.
