What began as a small project in a Harvard University dorm room on February 4, 2004, has grown into the world’s largest social media platform, connecting billions of people across the globe.

Facebook history  shows how a simple idea developed by college students transformed online communication, reshaped social networking, and changed the way people connect, share information, and do business on the internet,

In October 2003, Mark Zuckerberg created a website called Facemash while studying at Harvard University. The site allowed students to compare classmates’ photos.

However, Zuckerberg used photos from Harvard’s student directories without permission. As a result, the university shut down the website after only two days.

Even though Facemash failed, it revealed strong student interest in an online campus directory. Therefore, Zuckerberg decided to build something better.

TheFacebook Officially Launched

In January 2004, Zuckerberg began developing a new social networking platform. He worked with Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, Andrew McCollum, and Chris Hughes.

On February 4, 2004, they launched TheFacebook. Initially, only Harvard students could join. Users created profiles, uploaded photos, and connected with classmates.

The platform became an instant success. In fact, nearly half of Harvard’s undergraduate students signed up within the first month.

Expansion to More Universities

Soon afterward, TheFacebook expanded beyond Harvard. In March 2004, students at Stanford, Columbia, and Yale gained access.

Meanwhile, the founders moved to Palo Alto, California. There, they secured funding and focused on growing the company.

As interest increased, more universities joined the platform.

Facebook Gets a New Name

Another major milestone came in 2005. The company bought the facebook.com domain for $200,000.

After that, it dropped “The” from its name. The platform officially became Facebook.

The new name helped strengthen its global identity.

Opening Facebook to Everyone

In September 2006, Facebook opened registration to anyone aged 13 or older with a valid email address.

As a result, the platform expanded far beyond college campuses. Millions of new users joined within a short period. Consequently, Facebook became one of the fastest-growing social networks.

Facebook Today

Today, Facebook serves billions of users worldwide. People use it to communicate, share photos, promote businesses, and join online communities.

Moreover, the platform continues to introduce new features and services. It has also changed how people interact online.

Ultimately, Facebook’s journey shows how a simple university project became one of the most influential digital platforms in history.
