The Nigerian Senate has called for a comprehensive audit of aircraft in the fleets of the Presidency and the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to determine their serviceability and airworthiness following the October 5 crash of a NAF 931 ATR-42 aircraft in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The resolution followed a motion moved by Senator Osita Ngwu, who drew the attention of lawmakers to the tragedy and called for measures to prevent similar incidents.

The Senate also urged adequate funding for the Nigerian Air Force fleet and the regular replacement of ageing aircraft as part of efforts to improve aviation safety.

During deliberations, lawmakers called on the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau to conduct a thorough, transparent and comprehensive investigation into the crash, covering its immediate, root and remote causes.

They further urged the relevant authorities to make the findings public.

The motion also provided an opportunity for senators to express condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Chief of the Air Staff, the Nigerian Air Force, the Ondo State Government and the families of those affected by the tragedy.

Following the deliberations, the Senate observed a minute’s silence in honour of the victims.

The proposed aircraft audit is intended to establish the condition of the presidential and military fleets, while the investigation into the Igbokoda crash is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
