Electronic Arts (EA), the company behind EA Sports FC, The Sims, Battlefield and Mass Effect, has completed a $55 billion sale to a Saudi-led investment group.
The deal ranks as one of the biggest acquisitions in gaming history and takes EA private, meaning the company will no longer trade on the stock market.
Saudi-Led Group Completes EA Takeover
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), alongside Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, bought all publicly available shares to gain control of EA.
The deal follows Microsoft’s $69 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard, which remains the biggest acquisition in gaming history.
The takeover uses a leveraged buyout structure, with investors borrowing a large portion of the money needed to complete the purchase. PIF contributed about $36 billion and secured a further $20 billion loan from investment bankers, leaving EA responsible for repaying the debt.
Concerns Over EA’s Future and Creative Direction
The debt attached to the deal has raised concerns among analysts, who believe it could influence how EA operates in the coming years.
Some experts fear the company may introduce cost-cutting measures, including job losses, increased in-game purchases and a stronger focus on its most profitable franchises.
Fans have also questioned whether new ownership could affect creative decisions, especially in games like The Sims, which has built a reputation for diversity and LGBTQ+ representation.
Saudi Arabia’s Expanding Gaming and Sports Influence
The acquisition forms part of Saudi Arabia’s wider strategy to grow its presence in global sports, entertainment and gaming.
Through PIF, the country has invested in Premier League club Newcastle United, Saudi Pro League teams and major esports events, including the Esports World Cup.
Supporters believe the EA deal will strengthen the gaming industry, while critics have raised concerns about Saudi Arabia’s influence and human rights record.
EA CEO Andrew Wilson will remain in his position and said the company will continue creating experiences that inspire players around the world.
