The new leadership of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has pledged to work closely with the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) to help increase Nigeria’s crude oil production to 3 million barrels per day by 2030.
The new PENGASSAN President, Comrade Bosun Olabiyi-Agoro, made the commitment on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, during a visit to the corporate headquarters of the NUPRC in Abuja.
Olabiyi-Agoro said the union is prepared to collaborate with the upstream regulator and other stakeholders to support efforts aimed at increasing production and strengthening Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
The PENGASSAN president said while the union remains open to negotiations on issues affecting the industry, workers’ rights to freely associate and join a union remain non-negotiable.
He also identified contract staffing as one of the key issues his administration intends to address.
According to him, protecting workers’ rights and improving conditions within the industry will remain important priorities for the new PENGASSAN leadership.
NUPRC Seeks Industrial Stability
In her remarks, the Commission Chief Executive of the NUPRC, Mrs Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, said the Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, has continued to pursue measures aimed at increasing oil production.
Eyesan pointed to the latest executive order targeting investments in deep offshore operations as part of the government’s efforts to attract more investment and boost production.
She said Nigeria’s crude oil production has increased from about 1.1 million barrels per day a few years ago to an estimated 1.755 million barrels per day in 2026.
NUPRC Targets Higher Production
Despite the reported increase in production, Eyesan said industrial stability remains critical to achieving higher production targets.
She therefore sought the support and cooperation of PENGASSAN as the commission and industry stakeholders work towards increasing output.
The collaboration between the upstream regulator and the senior staff union is expected to focus on creating a stable operating environment while addressing issues affecting workers and oil and gas production.
The PENGASSAN visit comes as Nigeria continues efforts to increase crude oil production, attract investment into the upstream sector and maximise the country’s petroleum resources.
