A fresh crisis has emerged in the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) as presidential candidate Ofem Enang and other aspirants reject their disqualification from the association’s election.

The affected candidates described the decision as unconstitutional and called for an immediate reversal.

Candidates Challenge Disqualification

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Enang criticised the action of the National Officers’ Committee (NOC), accusing it of violating the NMA constitution.

He argued that the committee relied on administrative technicalities rather than constitutional provisions to bar candidates from contesting.

According to Enang, the NOC disqualified him and others over issues related to the number of copies of curriculum vitae submitted.

He insisted that such requirements do not form part of the constitutional criteria for eligibility.

“The constitution does not empower the NOC to disqualify candidates based on administrative technicalities,” he said.

Enang cited Article 11(1b) of the NMA constitution, which guarantees members the right to contest elective positions, subject only to clearly defined provisions.

The professor described the move as an attempt to influence the electoral process in favour of preferred candidates.

He warned that actions perceived as unfair could undermine trust in the association’s leadership.

Enang demanded:

  • Strict adherence to the NMA constitution
  • Transparency in the electoral process
  • Non-interference by the NOC
  • A level playing field for all candidates

He also urged doctors nationwide, including past NMA presidents and branch leaders, to defend the integrity of the association.

Other disqualified candidates, including Muhammad Isah and Sodipo Olanrewa, also rejected the decision.

They called on security agencies and authorities in the Federal Capital Territory to intervene and prevent the situation from escalating.

The dispute has heightened tensions within the association, raising concerns about unity and credibility ahead of the election.

Observers warn that unresolved grievances could affect the outcome and legitimacy of the process.

As pressure mounts, the NMA leadership faces a critical test in handling the dispute.

A transparent resolution will be key to restoring confidence and ensuring a credible election.
