After a disappointing 2025/26 season, Tottenham Hotspur have continued their summer rebuild by completing the signing of Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
Aware of growing interest from Europe’s elite clubs, West Ham adopted a firm stance from the outset. The Hammers made it clear that Fernandes would only leave for a fully guaranteed £85 million. They also refused to lower their valuation or rely on performance-related add-ons.
For much of the summer, Manchester United were considered the favourites to sign the midfielder. Fernandes had enjoyed an impressive campaign despite West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League.
United explored a deal but refused to meet West Ham’s asking price. Club officials believed the fee exceeded their valuation of the player. That hesitation opened the door for Tottenham.
Backed by new manager Roberto De Zerbi, Spurs acted decisively. The Italian views Fernandes as the ideal midfielder for his high-intensity, possession-based system.
Tottenham have now secured Fernandes’ signature for a club-record fee of £85 million. The deal lands one of Europe’s most sought-after young midfielders and marks another statement of intent in the club’s summer rebuild.
