Tottenham Agree Club-Record £100m Deal for Sandro Tonali

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a club-record £100 million deal to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, according to several British media reports.

The deal includes an initial payment of £92.5 million and a further £7.5 million in performance-related add-ons. Once completed, Tonali will become the most expensive signing in Tottenham’s history.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi reportedly convinced his fellow Italian to join Spurs. Tottenham also beat Premier League champions Arsenal and Manchester City in the race for the midfielder.

The move comes just one day after Spurs agreed an £85 million deal for Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United. Together, the two signings show the club’s determination to rebuild before the new season.

Spurs Step Up Their Rebuild

Tottenham have changed their transfer approach this summer. The club spent carefully for years under former chairman Daniel Levy. However, the Lewis family promised to back a major rebuild after Levy stepped down in September.

They have already started delivering on that promise. De Zerbi kept Spurs in the Premier League on the final day of last season after a difficult campaign. Now, the club is strengthening every area of the squad.

Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka have joined on free transfers. Spurs also signed Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton in a deal worth about £52 million.

If Tonali and Fernandes complete their moves, Tottenham will send a clear message that they want to compete at the top of the Premier League again.

Tonali Ready for a New Chapter

Newcastle signed Tonali from AC Milan for £55 million in July 2023. He played 12 matches before football authorities suspended him for breaking betting rules.

In October 2023, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) banned the midfielder for 10 months. Investigators found that he placed bets on football matches while playing in Italy. The rules ban players from betting on competitions organized by the FIGC, UEFA and FIFA.

Tonali returned after serving his suspension. In May 2024, the English Football Association also handed him a suspended two-month ban after he admitted further betting rule breaches.

Despite those setbacks, Tonali has rebuilt his career. Tottenham now see him as a key player for De Zerbi’s new-look midfield. If the transfer goes through, he will become one of the biggest signings of the summer.
