Thousands of Qur’anic scholars and Tsangaya teachers across Gombe State have passed a vote of confidence in the administration of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya and endorsed the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr. Jamilu Ishaku Gwamna, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The scholars, drawn from the 11 Local Government Areas of the state, made their position known at a gathering organised by the Coalition of Tsangaya Teachers of Gombe State.
The gathering provided an opportunity for the Alarammas to highlight what they described as key interventions by the Inuwa Yahaya administration in Qur’anic education, healthcare and skills development.
Among the initiatives they commended were the construction of modern Tsangaya schools and more than 120 equipped study centres across the state.
The scholars said the interventions had improved learning conditions for Qur’anic students, with some Almajiris gaining opportunities to study abroad, while others had benefited from improved accommodation, skills acquisition programmes and better learning facilities.
They also praised the enrolment of 1,000 Almajiris in the Gombe State Health Insurance Scheme, describing the initiative as an important step towards improving the welfare of vulnerable Qur’anic learners.
The establishment of the Almajiri Commission was similarly described as a landmark development capable of providing institutional support for Qur’anic education beyond the tenure of the current administration.
The Tsangaya teachers subsequently pledged to support Governor Inuwa Yahaya, Dr. Jamilu Ishaku Gwamna and other APC candidates, promising to mobilise their votes as well as those of their families and adult students.
Representing Governor Inuwa Yahaya at the event, the Chief of Staff, Government House, Alhaji Inuwa Kari, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to the welfare and advancement of education, including Qur’anic and Islamic education.
Kari said the governor had consistently promoted inclusion and ensured that citizens across the state were given a sense of belonging.
He assured the gathering that outstanding commitments made to the Qur’anic education community would be fulfilled before the expiration of the administration.
The Chief of Staff also said Governor Inuwa Yahaya had, after consultations, identified Dr. Jamilu Ishaku Gwamna, the Sardaunan Gombe, as his preferred successor.
He expressed confidence that Gwamna would sustain the achievements of the present administration and build on its existing programmes and policies.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Gombe Local Government Area and ALGON Chairman, Prof. Abdullahi Ahmad Garkuwa, thanked the scholars for their support while calling for greater inclusion of Alarammas and Qur’anic scholars in government appointments and decision-making.
He argued that greater representation would create more opportunities for the scholars and strengthen their sense of belonging in the governance of the state.
The Commissioner for Local Government, Barrister Sani Ahmad Haruna, urged local government chairmen to emulate the governor by supporting the activities of Qur’anic scholars and ensuring their participation in community development.
Similarly, the Secretary of the Muslims Welfare Board, Alhaji Sa’adu Hassan, said the administration’s interventions had contributed to the modernisation of Almajiri education and improved opportunities for Qur’anic learners.
He attributed the growing support for the APC among communities around Tsangaya schools to the administration’s efforts to integrate Qur’anic scholars and learners into government programmes.
Earlier, the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Almajiri and Tsangaya Education, Sayyada Amina Dahiru Bauchi, said education had remained a major priority of the administration.
She highlighted the construction of 11 mega Tsangaya schools across the state’s 11 local government areas, as well as other training centres established to provide learners with Islamic education, Western education and vocational skills.
According to her, the foundation for several of the initiatives was laid through the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) programme.
She added that Qur’anic scholars had also been provided opportunities to further their education in colleges and other institutions while maintaining their cultural and religious identity.
Responding on behalf of Dr. Jamilu Ishaku Gwamna, Alhaji Tanko Ishaku Gwamna pledged that the APC candidate would sustain and build on the achievements of Governor Inuwa Yahaya if elected.
He also appealed to the scholars to continue supporting Governor Inuwa Yahaya, Dr. Jamilu Ishaku Gwamna and other APC candidates across the state.
The event featured Qur’anic recitations and prayers for peace, unity and continued progress in Gombe State and Nigeria.
