Canada booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after beating South Africa 1-0 in their Round of 32 clash on Sunday.
Stephen Eustaquio scored a late winner at California Stadium to send the co-hosts into the next round. It is Canada’s first appearance in the World Cup Round of 16.
Eustaquio Scores Late Winner
The match remained goalless for most of the game. However, Canada found the breakthrough in stoppage time.
In the second minute of added time, a deflected cross fell to Eustaquio inside the box. The midfielder struck the ball into the bottom corner to seal victory.
The goal sparked celebrations among Canadian players and fans inside the stadium.
Canada Create Better Chances
South Africa enjoyed more possession during the match. However, Canada created the better scoring opportunities.
Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams kept South Africa in the game with several important saves. He denied Cyle Larin and Jonathan David in the first half.
Canada continued to attack and forced Williams into action on several occasions.
South Africa Fight Back
South Africa started brightly and threatened in the sixth minute. The team, coached by Hugo Broos, tried to control possession but struggled to create clear chances.
After the break, Thapelo Maseko tested Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau with a curling effort. Crepeau made a comfortable save.
Jacob Shaffelburg also came close for Canada, but Williams produced another fine stop.
Canada Make History
South Africa slowed the game late on as they aimed to reach extra time. However, Canada took advantage of a late opportunity to win the match.
The victory makes Canada the first CONCACAF team to win a World Cup knockout match since 2002.
Canada will now face either Morocco or the Netherlands in the Round of 16.
South Africa exit the tournament despite a brave performance and an outstanding display from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
