Former UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis delivered a dominant performance against former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman at UFC Fight Night in Oklahoma City on Saturday, July 18.
Du Plessis won by unanimous decision after five rounds with the judges scoring the fight 50-45, 49-46, and 49-46.
The South African started the fight with confidence pressing forward from the opening bell which forced Usman onto the back foot.
The former middleweight champion landed sharp punches and powerful kicks throughout the contest while also defending Usman’s wrestling well, stopping the Nigerian from controlling the fight.
His constant pressure allowed him to win most of the exchanges with the fight changing in the second round when Du Plessis landed a clean punch that affected Usman’s vision.
After the bout, Usman revealed that the strike blurred his eyesight making it difficult for him to see clearly for much of the fight.
Even with the injury, Usman refused to quit. He continued to exchange strikes and fought until the final bell.
The victory was an important one for Du Plessis coming after he lost the UFC middleweight title almost a year ago.
