A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reportedly cleared former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election, signaling a possible return to frontline politics nearly 12 years after leaving office.
The development followed a screening exercise conducted by the Tanimu Turaki-led interim factional National Working Committee of the PDP in Abuja ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Chairman of the PDP screening committee and former Vice President Namadi Sambo, represented by former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, disclosed that Jonathan was granted a waiver from the screening process because of his extensive political experience as deputy governor, governor, vice president and president.
According to the committee, Jonathan emerged as the sole presidential aspirant cleared by the faction for the 2027 race.
The former president has yet to officially declare his intention to contest the election, but recent political consultations and reports of renewed support within sections of the PDP have intensified speculation about his possible comeback.
Reacting to the development, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) described Jonathan’s reported clearance as a major political signal that could reshape alignments ahead of the next general election.
Political observers say Jonathan’s potential return could significantly alter the dynamics of the 2027 presidential contest, especially amid ongoing internal crises within major opposition parties.
