The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, has issued a strong warning to police officers against engaging in extortion and other forms of misconduct while carrying out their duties in Abuja.
The police commissioner said the command would not tolerate any officer who demands illegal payments from commercial tricycle operators, motorists or other road users, warning that anyone found involved in such acts would face disciplinary action.
According to CP Sanusi, officers must uphold the integrity of the police force and understand that corruption and professionalism cannot exist together. He urged personnel to choose between serving the public and engaging in criminal activities.
“We don’t want to hear any reports of extorting Keke riders or motorists in Abuja. If we hear such complaints, it means you are a thief. You cannot be both a thief and a police officer at the same time—you have to choose one,” the commissioner warned.
The directive comes amid recurring complaints by some commercial drivers and residents over alleged harassment, illegal collections and abuse of power by some law enforcement personnel.
CP Sanusi stressed that the responsibility of the police is to protect citizens, enforce the law and maintain public confidence, adding that misconduct by a few officers damages the reputation of the entire institution.
He encouraged residents and road users to report cases of extortion or unprofessional conduct by police officers, assuring that complaints would be investigated and appropriate sanctions applied.
The warning is part of ongoing efforts by police authorities to improve accountability, strengthen public trust and promote ethical conduct among officers serving in the nation’s capital.
