Being a successful chef requires more than knowing how to cook. It demands passion, patience, creativity, discipline, and consistency. These were the key messages shared by renowned chef, entrepreneur, digital creator, and food content creator, Chef Mah, during her appearance on Spotlight On, a programme on S24 Television, Abuja.
Chef Mah, whose real name is Maryam Saidu Ibrahim , opened up about her inspiring journey into the culinary industry, revealing that her success did not happen overnight.
According to her, her journey began during her university days when she started making and selling samosas and other small chops to earn an income. Although the business started on a small scale, it became the foundation of what has now grown into a successful culinary brand.
“My journey wasn’t easy. I started by selling samosas and small chops while I was in the university. At that point, it was just a small business,” she said.
She explained that a major turning point came when a client discovered her work and gave her a significant opportunity, opening doors to greater possibilities.
Determined to improve her skills, Chef Mah enrolled in a culinary school where she learned professional cooking techniques, recipes, food presentation, and kitchen management.
According to her, formal culinary education helped refine her talent and prepared her for the competitive food industry.
“It is not easy to be a chef. You must continue learning because food is always evolving,” she noted.
Chef Mah also highlighted the role social media has played in transforming her business. She said digital platforms have made it easier for entrepreneurs to reach customers, market their brands, and build trust with audiences across different locations.
However, she advised young people to use social media responsibly.
“Social media has helped me a lot in my business. I encourage young people to use it positively because it can become a powerful tool for growth when used well,” she said.
She also expressed gratitude to her father, whom she described as one of her earliest supporters. According to her, his encouragement and belief in her dreams gave her the confidence to pursue her passion despite the challenges.
Speaking on entrepreneurship, Chef Mah emphasized that success in business goes beyond creating attractive social media content or becoming an influencer.
She explained that the real foundation of every successful business is trust, consistency, quality, and customer satisfaction.
“Business is not just about influencing or creating content. It is about building trust. Your products should speak for themselves. People will always return when they trust your quality,” she said.
She further encouraged business owners to invest in proper branding and packaging, stressing that presentation often determines customers’ first impression.
According to her, products should not only be good but should also be professionally packaged and properly showcased to stand out in today’s competitive marketplace.
Chef Mah also challenged the common perception that she is only a food content creator.
She revealed that beyond being a chef, she is also a farmer, cinematographer, entrepreneur, and influencer, demonstrating that young people should not limit themselves to one skill.
She explained that food presentation remains one of the most important aspects of culinary excellence.
“If food is not well presented, it may not attract people, no matter how delicious it tastes. That’s why I pay attention to presentation in every content I create,” she said.
She added that her love for food extends beyond eating.
“I love food because I love cooking. If I cook for you, it means I genuinely care about you.”
Reflecting on her personal life, Chef Mah admitted that balancing motherhood, marriage, business, and content creation remains one of her biggest challenges.
She said managing multiple responsibilities requires proper planning, discipline, and effective time management.
“It is not easy being a mother, a wife, a businesswoman, and a content creator at the same time. It takes planning because when you become exhausted, your creativity and inspiration may disappear.”
She encouraged women not to abandon their dreams after marriage or motherhood but to find healthy ways of balancing family responsibilities with their careers.
Chef Mah also advised young entrepreneurs to take advantage of every opportunity because time changes quickly.
She noted that fame and popularity are temporary, urging people to focus on building lasting value rather than chasing trends.
“Today people may know Chef Mah, but tomorrow things can change. Time is constantly changing. Build something meaningful because the world moves on.”
She further encouraged aspiring entrepreneurs to continuously improve themselves, remain creative, and embrace innovation in order to stay relevant.
Throughout her career, Chef Mah said she has inspired many young people to see cooking as a professional career rather than just a domestic responsibility.
She believes food content creation has evolved beyond entertainment and can become a powerful platform for education, business growth, tourism promotion, and cultural preservation.
According to her, Nigeria’s rich culinary heritage offers enormous opportunities for entrepreneurs willing to innovate and tell authentic stories through food.
She concluded the interview with a word of caution to social media users, reminding them that online appearances can sometimes be misleading.
“Not everything you see on social media is genuine. People should focus on building real value instead of believing everything they see online.”
Her story serves as a reminder that success is built through hard work, continuous learning, resilience, and the courage to embrace opportunities. From selling samosas as a university student to becoming a respected chef, entrepreneur, digital creator, farmer, and cinematographer, Chef Mah’s journey reflects how passion, persistence, and proper planning can transform a simple idea into a thriving career.
