Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says he may step aside for Peter Obi to strengthen a united opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election. He added that the race will likely be his final attempt at Nigeria’s top office.

He spoke on Wednesday during an interview on Arise News, where he stressed that coalition-building now outweighs personal ambition. He also revealed his active role in talks under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Atiku warned that opposition parties cannot win on their own. He argued that only a strong alliance can challenge the ruling party in 2027. He linked this need to weakening support within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and described its economic performance as disappointing. He said public dissatisfaction creates an opening for a united opposition.

Atiku defended his relevance despite concerns about his age. He said experience still plays a key role in leadership. He added that younger politicians need guidance to succeed in governance.

He rejected calls to rotate the presidency to the South in 2027. Instead, he proposed a constitutional system for rotation. He admitted he opposed the idea in the past and now sees that decision as a mistake. He promised to push for a constitutional amendment if elected.

Atiku expressed confidence in his support base in northern Nigeria. He acknowledged growing divisions but insisted his influence remains strong. He stressed that unity across regions will decide the next election.
