As Osun State prepares for its August 15, 2026 governorship election, President Bola Tinubu has called on voters, political parties, candidates and security agencies to prioritise peace and ensure that the outcome reflects the will of the people.

The president urged residents to participate in the election without fear and make their choices based on their individual preferences. He also directed security agencies to protect voters, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials and election materials throughout the exercise.

Tinubu’s appeal comes as political activities intensify across the state, with 15 candidates in the race for the governorship seat. The president said the election must be conducted in a manner that strengthens public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.

Tinubu Calls for Peace Before the Vote

The president urged political parties and their supporters to avoid actions capable of triggering violence or disrupting the election. According to him, the ballot should provide Osun residents with the opportunity to freely determine who governs the state.

Tinubu also called on voters to remain calm throughout the electoral process and encouraged candidates and their supporters to respect the rules guiding the election. He stressed that disagreements arising from the poll should be addressed through established legal channels rather than through violence or confrontation.

The president further directed security agencies to maintain professionalism while carrying out their responsibilities. Their role, he said, should include protecting polling units, INEC officials and election materials while ensuring that voters can exercise their franchise without intimidation.

INEC Asked to Protect the Integrity of the Election

Tinubu also urged INEC to ensure that the Osun governorship election is free and fair, with every legitimate vote properly accounted for.

The president’s position places responsibility on the electoral commission, security agencies and political actors to create an environment where voters can participate freely.

A credible election, according to the president’s message, is not only about voting on election day. It also requires stakeholders to respect the process, protect electoral materials and allow the final result to reflect the choices made by voters.

For voters, the message is equally direct: participate peacefully, make an informed choice and allow the electoral process to take its course.

15 Candidates in the Race

A total of 15 candidates are contesting the Osun governorship election.

Among the leading contenders is incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is seeking another term on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is fielding Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate is Najeem Salaam.

With multiple candidates on the ballot, the election will give Osun voters the opportunity to choose among different political platforms and candidates seeking to lead the state.

The contest also carries political significance beyond the state, particularly as political parties and their supporters begin positioning themselves ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Why the Osun Election Matters

Governorship elections are often viewed as important tests of Nigeria’s democratic institutions because they bring political competition directly to the state level.

For Osun, the August 15 poll will determine who leads the state for the next administration and will provide voters with an opportunity to assess the candidates and their political programmes.

For the president, however, the significance extends beyond the immediate contest. Tinubu described the election as an important step towards the 2027 general elections and said a peaceful and credible process could help strengthen public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system.

That makes the conduct of the election almost as important as its outcome.

Security Agencies Face a Major Responsibility

The president’s directive also places security agencies at the centre of preparations for the election.

Their responsibility will include securing polling locations, protecting voters and election officials, and preventing actions that could interfere with the electoral process.

Tinubu specifically warned against conduct capable of disrupting the poll and called for security personnel to remain professional.

The expectation is that security operations should protect the electoral process without intimidating legitimate voters or political participants.

For voters, a peaceful security environment is critical to ensuring that citizens can reach polling units, cast their ballots and return home safely.

Candidates Asked to Respect the Outcome

The president also appealed to candidates and their supporters to put peace ahead of political rivalry.

Where an election is conducted according to the rules, he urged candidates to accept the outcome. However, he also acknowledged the right of anyone dissatisfied with the process to seek redress through the appropriate legal channels.

That approach places emphasis on institutions rather than confrontation as the means of resolving electoral disputes.

It also sends a message to political supporters that disagreement over an election result should not become an excuse for violence.

The Road to 2027

The Osun governorship election comes at a time when Nigeria’s political environment is already beginning to look towards the 2027 general elections.

The outcome will therefore attract attention beyond Osun State, particularly among political parties assessing their strength, voter preferences and electoral strategies.

More importantly, the conduct of the election could influence how voters perceive the country’s democratic institutions ahead of the next general election cycle.

A peaceful poll would demonstrate that political competition can take place without violence, while a credible process could reinforce confidence that votes can determine electoral outcomes.

The Choice Belongs to Osun Voters

As the state heads to the polls, Tinubu’s central message is that the election should belong to the people of Osun.

Voters are expected to choose their preferred candidates without fear, while political parties and their supporters are expected to respect the rules of the contest.

Security agencies have been tasked with protecting the process, and INEC has been urged to ensure that the election is free and fair.

Ultimately, the success of the Osun governorship election 2026 will be measured not only by who emerges victorious, but also by whether voters are able to participate peacefully and whether the final outcome commands public confidence.

For Osun, August 15 is more than another election date. It is another test of Nigeria’s democratic journey—and a reminder that the strength of an election lies in allowing the people’s choice to speak through the ballot.
