France, Spain Set for Blockbuster World Cup Semi-Final Clash

France and Spain will battle for a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final when they meet in a highly anticipated semi-final on Tuesday.

Les Bleus are aiming to move one step closer to a third World Cup title. They won the tournament in Russia in 2018 before finishing runners-up to Argentina in Qatar 2022 after a dramatic penalty shootout.

Spain, meanwhile, are chasing only their second World Cup crown. Their only triumph came at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

France Rely on Mbappe’s Firepower

France head into the encounter with one of the tournament’s most dangerous attacks. Kylian Mbappe has been in outstanding form, scoring eight goals to share the lead in the Golden Boot race with Argentina captain Lionel Messi.

Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise have also impressed. Their pace and creativity have helped stretch opposition defences throughout the competition.

Head coach Didier Deschamps can also call on Paris Saint-Germain duo Bradley Barcola and Desire Doue, who have both made important attacking contributions.

France are determined to erase the disappointment of their 2022 World Cup final defeat. They also hope to give Deschamps a memorable farewell, with the coach set to step down after 14 years in charge following the tournament.

Despite his team’s impressive pedigree, Deschamps believes Spain are favorites.

“Forget about Spain’s opening match against Cape Verde,” he said.

“Since then, they have shown why many people consider them the favourites.”

Spain Gather Momentum

Spain recovered from a goalless draw against World Cup debutants Cape Verde in their opening match to emerge as one of the strongest teams in the competition.

Coach Luis de la Fuente has restored the team’s trademark possession-based style, while La Roja have also been solid defensively. They have conceded just one goal so far in the tournament.

Teenage winger Lamine Yamal will once again be a key player for Spain. The Barcelona star has grown into the tournament after recovering from a hamstring injury.

The 19-year-old produced a player-of-the-match performance in Spain’s 2-1 quarter-final victory over Belgium.

Yamal also believes Spain have a psychological advantage over France after beating them in the UEFA Euro 2024 semi-finals and the 2025 UEFA Nations League semi-finals.

“I was asked if I was afraid of France, and I said no,” Yamal explained.

“We are European champions. That’s all I meant. This is football.”

The youngster added that reaching the World Cup final would be the perfect birthday present.

“The best gift would be beating France and travelling to New York for the final,” he said.

The winner of Tuesday’s encounter will advance to the World Cup final, where either defending champions Argentina or England await.
