Nigeria’s Super Falcons will aim to secure their place in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations when they face Egypt in their final Group C fixture.
The defending champions enter the crucial encounter with three points from their opening two matches, following a difficult start to their title defence.
Malawi currently lead Group C with six points, while Nigeria and Zambia are level on three points each. Egypt sit at the bottom of the group without a point.
A victory against Egypt will be enough to send the Super Falcons into the knockout stage in almost every qualification scenario. However, the qualification race could become complicated if Zambia defeat Malawi by one goal in a high-scoring match, such as a 4-3 result, which could force a three-way goal-difference tiebreaker between Nigeria, Zambia and Malawi.
Nigeria will be hoping to rediscover the form that helped them win a record-extending 10th WAFCON title in the previous tournament. The Super Falcons know that anything less than a win could put their hopes of retaining the continental crown under serious pressure.
The other Group C fixture will see Zambia’s Copper Queens take on group leaders Malawi, with both teams also fighting for progression.
The Nigeria versus Egypt clash will take place on August 5 at the Al Madina Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 9 p.m. local time as the Super Falcons battle for a place in the WAFCON quarterfinals.
