A fresh power struggle is unfolding in world football as England and several UEFA member nations reportedly consider boycotting future FIFA tournaments if the governing body sells commercial rights to private investors.
According to The Times, UEFA opposes FIFA’s proposal to create a new commercial company that would allow outside investors to buy minority stakes in competitions such as the FIFA World Cup, arguing that football’s biggest tournaments should remain under the control of the sport’s governing bodies.
The reported threat has intensified tensions between FIFA and UEFA, with European football leaders also questioning the lack of consultation before FIFA unveiled the proposal.
If UEFA follows through, the impact could be enormous because Europe is home to many of the world’s strongest national teams, including England, Spain, France, Germany and Italy.
Their absence would significantly reduce the sporting quality and global appeal of future FIFA competitions.
FIFA, however, insists the proposal will unlock new investment, increase revenue for football around the world and support the long-term growth of the game while allowing the organisation to retain full control of its tournaments.
Although no country has officially withdrawn from any FIFA competition, the warning has already sparked widespread debate and could shape the future of international football if both governing bodies fail to reach common ground.
