Canada celebrated its first ever men’s FIFA World Cup victory on Thursday, but a horrific injury to midfielder Ismaël Koné overshadowed the historic occasion.

The co-hosts cruised to a dominant 6-0 victory over Qatar at BC Place in Vancouver. However, the celebrations quickly turned to concern after Koné suffered a serious broken leg in the second half.

The incident occurred in the 54th minute when Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo challenged Koné from behind. Medical staff rushed onto the pitch after players from both teams reacted to the severity of the injury. Koné left the field on a stretcher before doctors transported him to a nearby hospital for surgery.

Referee officials initially showed Madibo a yellow card. However, a VAR review upgraded the punishment to a straight red card because of the dangerous challenge. Madibo later visited Koné in the dressing room and apologized for the tackle.

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch said he knew the injury was serious the moment it happened.

“It happened right in front of the bench. We could all hear it,” Marsch said after the match. He added that the sound of the impact reminded him of Tajon Buchanan’s broken leg during the 2024 Copa América preparations.

The emotional moment deeply affected the Canadian players. Midfielder Nathan Saliba, who replaced Koné, scored after coming on and celebrated by holding up Koné’s No. 8 jersey in tribute to his teammate. Striker Jonathan David also admitted the injury left the squad devastated despite the historic victory.

Before the injury, Canada had produced one of its finest World Cup performances. Jonathan David scored a hat-trick, while Cyle Larin, Nathan Saliba and an own goal completed the scoring. The emphatic result lifted Canada to the top of Group B with four points after two matches.

The victory marked Canada’s first ever win at a men’s FIFA World Cup finals. Still, Koné’s injury cast a shadow over the achievement and raised concerns about his recovery and the team’s chances for the rest of the tournament.
