Portugal’s captain Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be his last.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Portugal’s Round of 16 match against Spain, the 41‑year‑old said he is focused on enjoying every moment.

“This will be my last World Cup, but I hope tomorrow isn’t my last game,” Ronaldo explained. He added that he will retire from international football with no regrets, knowing he has given everything to the sport.

Ronaldo stressed that his motivation comes from passion, not from proving himself. “I play football because I love it. You have to enjoy every day. I’ve already scored three goals at this World Cup, so I’m not doing too badly,” he said with a smile.

The Portuguese star has made history in the tournament, becoming the first player to score in six different World Cups. He netted twice against Uzbekistan in the group stage and scored his first knockout goal against Croatia in the Round of 32.

Reflecting on the experience, Ronaldo described this World Cup as the most emotionally rewarding of his career. “It’s been fantastic. The passion from people has been incredible. This is the World Cup I’ll remember the most,” he said.

Although he has never won the trophy, Ronaldo insisted his legacy is secure. “Winning or not winning the World Cup won’t change who I am. Only one country can win it, but I already have everything I need in life,” he explained.

Currently playing for Al‑Nassr in Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo also expressed gratitude for the criticism he has faced over the years. “Even the attacks helped me grow. I thank the journalists for that. Criticism makes you stronger,” he said.
