Julius Abure, the factional National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has warned Senator Seriake Dickson, leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), to be careful in his political alliance with Peter Obi and his supporters.
Abure gave the warning after Obi emerged as the NDC’s presidential candidate following his ratification at the party’s national convention in Abuja on May 30. According to him, the NDC should learn from the internal crisis that affected the Labour Party after the 2023 general election.
The LP chieftain said Dickson appeared to have taken lessons from the party’s experience by reportedly refusing to hand over all elective positions to Obi’s supporters. He argued that political parties must protect their leadership structures to avoid future disputes.
Abure alleged that several politicians elected on the Labour Party platform, including Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, later turned against the party leadership despite the support they received before the elections.
He claimed that the Labour Party granted many tickets to Obi’s supporters, with some receiving them free of charge as part of efforts to strengthen the party’s electoral chances.
According to Abure, the crisis within the Labour Party worsened after the Independent National Electoral Commission acted on a court ruling regarding the tenure of the party’s executives, leading to the emergence of an interim leadership committee.
He advised Dickson to ensure that trusted loyalists occupy key positions within the NDC, arguing that strong internal support is necessary to maintain stability and defend the party’s leadership when challenges arise.
Abure also claimed that some of Obi’s supporters joined the NDC with the aim of taking control of the party structure, warning that other political leaders should avoid repeating what he described as the Labour Party’s mistakes.
