Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has urged Nigeria’s opposition parties to focus their political campaigns on policies and solutions to the country’s challenges rather than concentrating on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s alleged legal issues in the United States.
Sani made the call while discussing the political direction of the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, opposition parties seeking to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) must present Nigerians with clear and practical alternatives capable of addressing the country’s economic and security challenges.
He cautioned against allowing controversies surrounding President Tinubu’s legal matters in the United States to dominate the opposition’s political messaging.
Sani’s position comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition parties and emerging political coalitions seeking to build a stronger platform to challenge the APC.
The former senator suggested that Nigerians would be more interested in concrete proposals on issues affecting their daily lives, including the economy, unemployment, insecurity, education and the cost of living.
He therefore encouraged opposition politicians to develop policies that can convince voters that they have viable alternatives to the current administration.
The call adds to the growing debate over the strategy opposition parties should adopt as they prepare for the 2027 presidential election, particularly whether their campaigns should focus primarily on criticizing the Tinubu administration or presenting detailed policy alternatives.
Sani’s comments underline the importance of issue-based politics and policy-driven campaigns as political parties position themselves for the 2027 electoral contest.
