Aliko Dangote, the richest Black man alive, has built one of Africa’s largest business empires through investments in cement, sugar, fertilizer and oil refining.

His success has made him Africa’s wealthiest billionaire and one of the richest people in the world, with a fortune estimated at around US$36.8 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Born on April 10, 1957, in Kano, Nigeria, Dangote developed an interest in business at a young age by selling sweets to classmates.

After graduating from Al-Azhar University in Egypt in 1977, he returned to Nigeria and used a US$3,000 loan from his uncle to start a trading business. He later founded the Dangote Group in 1981.

Today, the Dangote Group operates in cement, sugar, fertiliser, oil refining and other industries. Its biggest assets include Dangote Cement, the largest cement producer in sub-Saharan Africa, and the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos, Africa’s largest refinery with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.

Dangote is also preparing the next generation to lead the business. His three daughters,Mariya, Halima and Fatima Dangote, hold senior leadership roles across the Dangote Group as part of his succession plan.

In a recent interview with James Dumoulin of The School of Hard Knocks, Dangote downplayed the focus on his billionaire status.

Instead, he said his greatest achievement is building industries that create jobs, strengthen Africa’s economy and inspire future entrepreneurs.

His story continues to serve as one of Africa’s greatest examples of vision, resilience and long-term business success.
