Manchester United confirmed that midfielder Manuel Ugarte sustained a knee ligament injury during Uruguay’s World Cup loss to Spain, a defeat that ended their campaign in the group stage.
The incident occurred just before half-time when Ugarte collided with a teammate. He left the pitch in tears and was later ruled out.
United released a statement saying medical assessments are ongoing to decide the best treatment plan and recovery timeline, adding: “Everyone wishes Manuel a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way.”
Ugarte himself described the setback as “the most serious injury a footballer can face.” In an emotional Instagram post, he wrote: “Hitting rock bottom will make me stronger in every sense, and I truly believe that’s the case here.”
Meanwhile, United are close to finalizing a deal for Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta. Sky Sports News reports the club will add at least one more midfielder, with Ugarte expected to depart this summer. His exit could open the door for a third signing in the middle of the park.
Since joining from PSG in 2024, Ugarte has struggled to establish himself. He made only eight starts in 22 Premier League appearances last season and did not feature in the final six matches after starting in a 2-1 defeat to Leeds.
