Portugal Beat Nigeria in Leiria Ahead of World Cup Campaign

Portugal secured a 2-1 victory over Nigeria in a World Cup warm-up match on Wednesday night, with goals from Pedro Neto and Francisco Conceicao helping Roberto Martinez’s side overcome the Super Eagles in Leiria.

Chelsea forward Pedro Neto gave Portugal the lead midway through the first half after the hosts dominated the early stages of the contest. However, Nigeria responded well and drew level before halftime through Akor Adams, who finished off a well-worked attacking move.

The second half saw Portugal continue to press for a winner, and Juventus winger Francisco Conceicao delivered the decisive moment 15 minutes from time, restoring Portugal’s advantage and sealing the victory.

Despite the win, it was a frustrating evening for Cristiano Ronaldo. The 41-year-old captain, preparing for a record sixth FIFA World Cup appearance, squandered several clear opportunities and failed to add to his impressive international goal tally.

Ronaldo’s role in the squad continues to generate debate among some observers, who believe Portugal’s talented young core could flourish without relying heavily on the veteran forward. Nevertheless, head coach Roberto Martinez remains committed to his captain as Portugal aim for a strong World Cup campaign.

With all players now available following the arrival of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League-winning quartet, Martinez named a strong lineup featuring midfielders Vitinha and Joao Neves alongside Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes.

Portugal will depart on Friday for their World Cup base camp in Palm Beach, Florida, before opening their tournament campaign against the Democratic Republic of Congo on June 17 in Houston. They will then face Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K.

The victory provides Portugal with valuable momentum ahead of the tournament, while Nigeria will look to build on an encouraging performance despite the defeat.
