A viral AI generated video mocking Kylian Mbappé and France’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup has sparked widespread criticism on X, with many users describing the clip as embarrassing and unnecessary.

The animated video imagines Mbappé in a humorous fantasy style setting after France’s elimination from the tournament. Some viewers compared its visuals to scenes from the popular anime Black Clover. However, the comparison did little to impress critics, who dismissed the clip as “AI slop” and questioned the growing flood of low quality AI generated content online.

Many football fans said the video crossed the line from harmless humour into tasteless mockery, especially because it targeted one of France’s biggest football stars following a disappointing World Cup campaign.

Beyond the jokes, the debate quickly shifted to the environmental cost of generative AI. Several users argued that creating such content consumes significant computing power, electricity, and water used to cool data centres. They claimed producing low-value AI videos wastes valuable resources and contributes to unnecessary carbon emissions.

Others mocked Mbappé’s supporters for reacting strongly to the clip, while some users called for stricter rules to reduce the spread of AI generated content on social media.

The incident reflects a growing debate over the role of artificial intelligence in online entertainment. While AI tools make it easier to create realistic videos and animations, critics argue that many viral clips prioritize attention over creativity and often fuel online harassment.

As AI generated content becomes more common, platforms and users continue to wrestle with questions about quality, ethics, misinformation, and the environmental impact of the technology. The viral Mbappé video has become the latest example of how AI generated entertainment can quickly divide opinion online.
