Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has urged Nigerians to approach the 2027 general elections with greater responsibility and commitment to democratic values.
Speaking at a public forum on democratic development, Jega asked voters to assess candidates carefully. He said Nigerians should focus on competence, integrity, and capacity to deliver good governance. He warned against voting based on ethnicity, religion, or financial inducement.
He stressed that the country’s future depends on the choices citizens make at the polls. Therefore, he urged voters not to sell their votes or allow political actors to manipulate them.
Jega also called for active participation in the electoral process. He encouraged voter registration, civic education, and peaceful engagement as key steps to strengthen democracy.
In addition, he advised political parties to field credible candidates. He urged them to run issue-based campaigns that address insecurity, unemployment, and economic instability.
He further noted that electoral institutions must improve transparency. According to him, building public trust in the system remains essential for credible elections.
The former electoral chief encouraged young people to get involved in politics. He described them as critical stakeholders in Nigeria’s democratic future.
Jega expressed optimism about the 2027 elections. He said informed voters and responsible leadership could mark a turning point for Nigeria’s democracy.
