President Bola Tinubu has led tributes to Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka as the renowned playwright, poet and activist marked his 92nd birthday.
Born in Abeokuta in 1934, Soyinka made history in 1986 when he became the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
He earned global recognition for his powerful works, which blend African traditions with universal themes of justice, freedom and human dignity.
In his birthday message, Tinubu described Soyinka as a rare “living repository of history, knowledge and courage.” He also praised the literary icon for his unwavering commitment to democracy, good governance and human rights.
The President reflected on their shared struggle against military rule during the 1990s, noting that Soyinka remained fearless in speaking out against oppression despite personal risks.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across Nigeria and around the world, with admirers celebrating Soyinka’s remarkable contributions to literature, education and social justice. Many also highlighted his lifelong advocacy for democracy and his influence on generations of writers and activists.
The celebrations come months after the National Arts Theatre was renamed in Soyinka’s honour, recognizing his lasting impact on Nigeria’s cultural and literary heritage.
As he turns 92, well wishers have wished the celebrated author good health, long life and many more years of inspiring people through his words, ideas and unwavering commitment to justice.
