The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has called on President Bola Tinubu to suspend the proposed reforms of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

He warned that the changes could weaken national integration and security roles of the scheme.

Agbese made the appeal in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja. He represents the Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency of Benue State.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has already unveiled a broad reform plan for the NYSC describing the initiative as the most comprehensive review of the scheme in more than five decades.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, said the reforms aim to modernise the NYSC adding that the government wants to align it with current economic realities.

Furthermore, officials said the review will improve efficiency within the scheme. They also said it will strengthen youth development outcomes nationwide.

However, the proposals have triggered concern among lawmakers and stakeholders. Critics argue that some changes may alter the original purpose of the NYSC.

Agbese urged caution in implementing the reforms. He said the NYSC must retain its core mandate of national unity and discipline.

According to him, the scheme plays a critical role in integrating young Nigerians. It also promotes patriotism and national cohesion.

“Reducing NYSC to a skill acquisition training centre is not healthy for our national life,” he said.

In addition, he stressed that corps members provide essential manpower in key sectors. These include education, healthcare, and emergency response services.

Consequently, he warned that narrowing the scheme’s scope could weaken national service delivery.

Agbese called for a wider review committee. He suggested including lawmakers, security experts, youth groups, and former NYSC officials.

Moreover, he said reforms must follow extensive consultation. This would ensure that all stakeholders contribute to the process.

He further warned that rushed implementation could create unintended consequences. Therefore, he urged the presidency to pause the reform process.

The lawmaker also rejected proposals to replace military leadership in the NYSC with civilian control. He argued that the military structure has helped maintain discipline.

In his view, military involvement instils patriotism among participants. It also strengthens the sense of national duty.

“Instilling military training in citizens is an international practice that must be sustained,” he said.

Meanwhile, he maintained that the structure has supported stability within the scheme over the years.

The Federal Government, however, insists that the reforms are necessary. It says the NYSC must evolve to remain relevant in a changing economy.

Officials explained that the review will improve operational efficiency. In addition, they said it will expand opportunities for youth empowerment.

The government has not yet responded directly to calls for suspension. Nevertheless, it maintains that the reforms are in the national interest.
