The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed reports of an alleged bandit attack in Ogbomoso and nearby communities.
Police described the incident as a false alarm caused by misinformation and unverified reports shared among residents and students.
The rumours sparked fear across parts of Ogbomoso, including Ajaawa Town and areas around Are-Ago High School.
According to police spokesman Olayinka Ayanlade, residents became alarmed after claims surfaced that armed bandits had invaded the community.
The rumours quickly spread through schools and nearby neighbourhoods.
As a result, many residents feared a possible security attack.
Following the reports, the Police Command immediately deployed surveillance and patrol teams to the affected areas.
Officers assessed the situation to prevent panic and maintain public order.
However, investigations later confirmed there was no bandit attack or security breach.
“The Oyo State Police Command wishes to categorically state that there was no bandit attack, invasion, or any form of security breach,” the statement said.
Police explained that the alarm started after students at Are-Ago High School reportedly saw unfamiliar individuals behind the school fence.
The report created tension among students and teachers inside the school.
Soon after, unverified information spread to neighbouring communities, worsening public fear.
Preliminary findings showed that the individuals involved included an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) attached to the Kwara State Command.
Two civilians travelling in a Toyota Venza SUV also accompanied the officer.
According to police, the group stated they visited the area to celebrate the birthday of the female occupant of the vehicle.
Authorities later contacted NSCDC officials in Ogbomoso to verify the officer’s identity.
The Command revealed that an argument reportedly broke out between some teachers and the visitors during the encounter.
This disagreement increased suspicion within the school environment and contributed to the spread of the false alarm.
Meanwhile, police have increased patrols and visibility policing across Ogbomoso and nearby communities.
Authorities also engaged community leaders and stakeholders to calm residents and restore confidence.
The Command confirmed that normal academic, business, and social activities have resumed fully in the area.
The Police Command warned residents against spreading fake news and unverified security reports.
Officials stressed that false information can create unnecessary panic and disrupt public peace.
They urged residents to verify security information through official channels before sharing it.
