West Ham United have been relegated from the Premier League after a dramatic final day of the season, even though they beat Leeds United 3-0 at home.
The result at the London Stadium gave fans hope. However, survival depended on other results going their way.
West Ham also needed Tottenham Hotspur to lose against Everton. Spurs instead won 1-0. That result left West Ham two points short of safety.
Goals from Taty Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen and Callum Wilson secured a strong win. Still, it was not enough to keep the club in the top flight.
Manager Nuno Espirito Santo expressed his sadness after the final whistle. He said the team did their part but could not control the outcome elsewhere.
“We are sad and disappointed,” Nuno told the BBC. “We knew the situation was tough. We did our job, but it was not enough.”
He also apologised to supporters for the club’s relegation. At the same time, he praised the players for showing effort and character in a difficult season.
Nuno thanked the fans for their strong support throughout the campaign. He said the club now faces a hard period ahead after dropping to the Championship.
The manager admitted the coming days would be painful as the reality sets in. He added that the club must first accept the disappointment before thinking about the future.
West Ham’s 14-year stay in the Premier League has now come to an end. The club will look to rebuild and aim for a quick return to the top division.
