Tottenham Hotspur have broken their club-record transfer fee for the second time in just a matter of days after reaching an agreement with Newcastle United to sign Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali.

The proposed deal is worth £92.5 million, with a further £7.5 million in performance-related add-ons, potentially taking the total package to £100 million.

The agreement comes only days after Spurs agreed an £85 million deal to sign Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United, a transfer that had already become the most expensive in the club’s history.

By moving quickly for Tonali, Tottenham have immediately raised the bar again, highlighting the club’s determination to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level.

If the Tonali transfer is completed, he will become Tottenham’s sixth signing of the summer transfer window.

Spurs have already strengthened several areas of the team with the arrivals of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke, Martin Dúbravka and Mateus Fernandes.

Tonali would add quality, composure and top-level experience to Tottenham’s midfield. The 26-year-old Italy international has established himself as one of Europe’s finest central midfielders, combining defensive intelligence with excellent passing range and leadership qualities.

His arrival would be another major statement from a club looking to re-establish itself among England’s elite.

After years of criticism over a cautious approach in the transfer market, Spurs have now committed well over £200 million on new signings this summer alone, underlining their intention to challenge for Champions League qualification and major trophies.
