Three Nigerian students have arrived in Rome to represent the country at the International STEM and Coding Olympiad Grand Final, with their participation fully sponsored by education technology entrepreneur Alex Onyia.
The team comprises Egejurum Onyedikachi, Chimdiebube Onwubiko, and Don Anele Munachimso, all from schools in Nigeria’s Southeast region.
They will compete against some of the world’s brightest young minds in a contest that attracts participants from leading education systems.
Among the delegation is Primary 6 pupil Egejurum Onyedikachi, who has earned recognition as a national mathematics champion. He joins his teammates in a bid to secure medals for Nigeria on the global stage.
Teachers accompanying the students are also experiencing their first trip outside the country, making the competition a significant milestone for the entire delegation.
Onyia, who funded the trip, said he hopes the Nigerian representatives will challenge established STEM powerhouses such as China, the United States, and Singapore.
The initiative highlights the growing role of private individuals and organizations in supporting education and talent development in Nigeria, particularly in areas where public investment remains limited.
As the competition gets underway in Rome, expectations remain high that the young Nigerians will deliver strong performances and showcase the country’s potential in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Their participation underscores the importance of sustained investment in education, innovation, and youth development as Nigeria seeks to strengthen its position in the global knowledge economy.
