A former Senator representing Ogun Central, ex-Commissioner for Health, and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC). She said her decision was based on what she described as persistent disrespect, rejection, and unfair treatment by the party leadership in Ogun State.
Obasanjo recently participated in the party’s governorship race in the state. She confirmed her resignation in a letter dated May 31, addressed to the Ogun APC Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi. The letter was also made available to journalists in Abeokuta.
In her statement, she faulted the consensus process that produced Senator Solomon Adeola (Yayi) as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election, arguing that it did not follow APC’s established guidelines.
She explained that although she had agreed to respect any consensus arrangement, she was not consulted or involved before Adeola was declared the party’s consensus choice.
She further alleged that some of her supporters were barred from entering the venue where the candidate was announced and were treated unfairly.
Despite her concerns, she said she accepted the outcome in the interest of party unity and even publicly congratulated Senator Adeola on his emergence.
According to her, Adeola later requested a meeting with her supporters, during which they presented three requests. She said he promised to respond within one week, but no feedback had been received after more than two months.
She added that the situation reflected a repeated pattern of exclusion and lack of respect for her role within the party.
She quoted that when respect is absent, “one should leave the table,” explaining that she no longer felt welcome in the APC.
However, she expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, the Ogun APC Chairman Chief Sanusi, and the Ogun Central Senatorial leadership for their support while she was still in the party.
Iyabo Obasanjo had recently returned to active politics and joined the APC in Ward 11, Ibogun, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State. She also declared her intention to contest the Ogun governorship election under the party before her resignation.
