Nigerian comedian and actor Layi Wasabi has shared how his changing life experiences transformed the way he listens to Wizkid’s music.
Speaking on The Joey Akan Experience podcast, Layi recalled defending Wizkid during heated school debates. However, he admitted that he only began to fully appreciate the singer’s newer sound after his own life improved.
“I started to enjoy the new Wizkid when life started to get better for me,” Layi said, explaining that songs such as Slow and Essence resonated with him as he gained new experiences.
He contrasted Wizkid’s earlier records, including Ojuelegba, with the artist’s more luxurious and relaxed sound in recent years. According to Layi, an artist’s experiences naturally shape their music, just as listeners connect differently with songs as their own lives evolve.
“You are mostly inspired by your experience,” he said, adding that his personal growth helped him understand the themes behind Wizkid’s newer releases.
Layi’s comments have struck a chord with fans online, many of whom agreed that different stages of life often influence musical taste. His reflection also comes as Wizkid continues to enjoy global recognition and collaborations with international music icons, reinforcing his evolution from street-inspired storytelling to a more refined, global sound.
