GSU Reaffirms Research Commitment at 25th Inaugural Lecture

Gombe State University (GSU) has reaffirmed its commitment to scientific research, innovation, and academic excellence with the successful delivery of its 25th Inaugural Lecture.

The lecture, titled “Small Molecules as the Biochemical Architecture of Human Health,” was delivered by Professor Fatima Umar Maigari, Professor of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition in the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Science.

Declaring the event open on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sani Ahmed Yauta, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Danladi Mohammed Umar, described inaugural lectures as an important tradition that reflects years of academic research, teaching, and contributions to society.

He commended Professor Maigari for her contributions to Clinical Biochemistry and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to promoting research, innovation, and knowledge development.

The lecture attracted notable personalities, including the representative of the Chancellor of Gombe State University, Alhaji Mohammed Baba Mabani; Chairperson of the Governing Board of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, Hajiya Zainab Abubakar Ibrahim; former Vice-Chancellor, Professor M. I. Umar; former Registrar, Malam A. Yuguda; and other academics, researchers, government officials, and students.

In her presentation, Professor Maigari explained the importance of small molecules in human health, highlighting their role in metabolism, cellular communication, nutrition, disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

She noted that advances in biochemical research are contributing to the growth of precision medicine and improving understanding of disease processes, creating opportunities for better healthcare delivery.

The professor called for increased investment in biomedical research, stronger collaboration among different fields of study, and greater support for scientific innovation to address emerging health challenges.

The event, held at the Haruna Kadir Rashid Hall, provided a platform for academic discussions and further demonstrated Gombe State University’s growing reputation as a centre for impactful research and knowledge generation.

The lecture ended with the presentation of a commemorative plaque to Professor Fatima Umar Maigari in recognition of her scholarly contribution.
