Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has paid the outstanding balance for writer Onyeka Nwelue’s knee surgery, a gesture that has drawn widespread praise and sparked debate online.
Nwelue shared the news on July 13, revealing that he contacted Soyinka to seek help with the medical bill. According to him, the literary icon assured him that support would come once he arrived in Lagos. Shortly afterwards, Soyinka sent proof of payment, clearing the remaining balance for the ₦39 million procedure.
Expressing gratitude, Nwelue described Soyinka’s intervention as life changing. The two have maintained a long standing relationship, with Soyinka previously defending the writer during public controversies and writing a recommendation letter in support of his academic pursuits.
The generous act came as Soyinka celebrated his 92nd birthday, adding another chapter to his reputation for supporting writers and intellectuals beyond his literary achievements.
However, the development also triggered mixed reactions on social media. While many users applauded Soyinka’s compassion and willingness to help, others revisited Nwelue’s past comments about poverty.
Critics circulated old social media posts, including one that read, “Poor People = Bitter People,” arguing that Nwelue’s previous remarks conflicted with his acceptance of public support. Others, however, maintained that receiving medical assistance should not be overshadowed by past online statements.
Despite the debate, many Nigerians focused on Soyinka’s generosity, describing the Nobel laureate’s action as a reminder of the importance of compassion and standing by others in difficult moments.
