The Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has warned traders and market leaders to stop dumping waste illegally, stating markets that ignore the rules risk closure to protect public health.
Managing Director Farouk Akintunde gave the warning after clearing refuse at Farmers’ Market in Ifo and Mamu Market in Ijebu North. He condemned traders who dump waste inside markets instead of using collection points.
Akintunde explained that the practice pollutes the environment and threatens public health. He noted that OGWAMA has repeatedly educated market leaders, yet some traders still ignore the advice.
He urged leaders to enforce sanitation and proper disposal. He warned that any return to illegal dumping after the recent cleanup will lead to sanctions, including market closure.
Akintunde advised traders to use licensed waste collectors. He said indiscriminate dumping contaminates food and raises the risk of poisoning and disease outbreaks.
He stressed that markets must remain clean. He added that exposing food to waste violates sanitation standards and will no longer be tolerated.
