The inaugural Meridian Cup made history on July 4, 2026, at the Usman Dantata Polo Ground. The tournament marked Nigeria’s first bilateral inter-club polo competition, bringing together Lagos Polo Club and Kano Polo Club in a landmark sporting event.

Lagos Polo Club fielded three teams to compete in the Meridian Cup, Pop Cola Cup and Aminu Dantata Memorial Cup. Throughout the tournament, the players displayed impressive teamwork, determination and sportsmanship. Their performances entertained spectators and highlighted the quality of polo talent across the country.

Meanwhile, hundreds of polo enthusiasts gathered at the venue to support their teams and witness the launch of a competition expected to become a regular feature on Nigeria’s polo calendar. The event also celebrated the long-standing relationship between Lagos Polo Club and Kano Polo Club while promoting healthy competition between the two clubs.

Speaking on the significance of the tournament, Lagos Polo Club President Adeyemo Alakija explained the meaning behind the name Meridian Cup.

According to Alakija, a meridian is an imaginary line that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole. He said the concept perfectly represents the tournament because it connects Lagos in southern Nigeria with Kano in the north. As a result, the competition serves as a symbol of unity and cooperation through sport.

Furthermore, Alakija described the Meridian Cup as Nigeria’s first bilateral polo tournament involving two clubs. He noted that the competition aims to strengthen friendship, encourage sportsmanship and deepen the bond between the northern and southern polo communities.

“The Meridian Cup represents more than just polo. It symbolizes the connection between the North and the South, promoting friendship, unity and sportsmanship through one of Nigeria’s oldest sporting traditions,” he said.

Overall, the successful debut of the Meridian Cup marks an important milestone for Nigerian polo. Going forward, organisers expect the tournament to attract more clubs, leading players and passionate supporters. They also hope the annual event will continue to strengthen national unity while raising the profile of polo across Nigeria.
