Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, has officially defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and has emerged as the party’s governorship candidate for Gombe State. The development was confirmed on Tuesday, marking a major shift in the state’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Pantami’s emergence follows days of intense political speculation after reports surfaced that he was considering a move to the PDP following his withdrawal from the APC governorship primary process.
The former minister’s decision had generated mixed reactions within the PDP, with some aspirants earlier opposing what they described as an attempt to introduce him into the race after he had participated in APC’s internal processes. However, the latest development appears to have settled the uncertainty as party stakeholders rallied behind his candidacy.
His defection is expected to significantly alter the dynamics of the Gombe governorship contest, positioning him as one of the leading contenders in the race for the state’s top seat.
Political observers believe Pantami’s national profile, experience in public service, and strong grassroots support could strengthen the PDP’s chances in the forthcoming election.
More details are expected as the party releases an official statement on the circumstances surrounding his emergence.
