The Joint Task Force (JTF) has warned residents in North-East Nigeria to stay alert during the Eid El Kabir celebration. Security officials said Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters may try to launch attacks during the festive period.
The warning comes as Muslim faithful prepare for the Eid celebration on Wednesday. Authorities said terrorists may take advantage of crowded places and festive activities to target civilians.
In a statement released on Monday, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer at Headquarters Joint Task Force (North-East), Operation HADIN KAI, said intelligence reports revealed possible threats during the holiday season.
He explained that terrorists could use suicide bombers and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to carry out attacks. He added that crowded places remain possible targets because they attract large numbers of people.
Markets, motor parks, prayer grounds, banking halls, and other public areas may face higher security risks during the celebration.
The military said it has taken steps to stop any attack. Troops have moved to strategic locations across the region. Security agencies have also activated Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) assets to monitor activities and identify threats.
Security patrols now cover more communities. The military also works with sister agencies, the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local vigilance groups to improve safety.
Officials said the joint effort aims to protect residents and maintain peace during the holiday.
The JTF advised residents to celebrate close to home and stay within familiar areas where possible. It also encouraged people to avoid large open gatherings unless necessary.
Security officials asked residents to remain careful in crowded places. People should pay attention to unusual movements or suspicious activities around them.
The military also urged citizens to report strange objects, suspicious persons, or unusual activities to security agencies immediately.
Residents should cooperate with security officials during patrols and screening exercises. The command also advised people to avoid unnecessary movement at night, especially in areas with limited security presence.
The Theatre Command asked traditional rulers, religious leaders, media organizations, and community leaders to support security efforts.
It encouraged them to educate residents and promote the timely sharing of useful security information.
The military also warned against spreading rumors or false information. Officials said unverified reports could create fear and confusion among residents.
Operation HADIN KAI assured residents that troops remain prepared and ready to respond to any threat. The command said it remains committed to protecting lives and ensuring peaceful Eid El Kabir celebrations across the North-East.
