President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new Nigerian Army battalion in Omu-Aran, the headquarters of Irepodun Local Government Area in Kwara State.
The approval forms part of the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen security and improve the military’s response to threats in the state and nearby communities.
The Kwara State Government announced the decision on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 with the Governor’s Deputy Chief Press Secretary, Mashood Agboola, confirming the development in a statement.
According to the state government, the new battalion will increase the presence of soldiers and military equipment across Kwara while also improving the response to banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and other violent crimes.
The government believes the military formation will help protect residents and support existing security operations.
Governor AbdulRazaq welcomed the approval and thanked President Tinubu for responding to the state’s security needs. He described the decision as a major step toward strengthening Kwara’s security network and improving public safety.
The governor also said the battalion would support the work of other security agencies already operating in the state, expressing confidence that the additional military presence would help maintain peace and create a safer environment for residents and businesses.
The government is yet to announce when construction will begin or when troops will move into the new facility with more details expected as plans for the battalion progress.
