Sulaiman Usman Yusuf, has called on Nigerian leaders to emulate the legacies of past nationalist leaders such as Obafemi Awolowo, Ahmadu Bello and Nnamdi Azikiwe in order to address the country’s growing security and leadership challenges.
Sulaiman made the remarks while speaking as a guest on S24 Television Insight in Abuja, where he discussed the state of security and governance in Nigeria.
According to him, the country continues to suffer due to poor leadership and the failure of many public office holders to invest in long-term national development. He specifically praised the late Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello, for investing in education and human capital development in Northern Nigeria.
He explained that the Sardauna established schools and promoted scholarship opportunities that helped produce respected scholars and professionals, including those linked to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, instead of depending heavily on foreign education systems.
The security expert also criticised modern political leaders for abandoning public responsibilities once they assume office. He lamented that many leaders now prefer travelling abroad for medical treatment and other services rather than improving institutions at home.
“Once some leaders cough, they rush abroad for medical attention instead of fixing the country’s healthcare system,” he said.
Sulaiman further stressed that Nigeria’s security challenges require a holistic approach, noting that improving the economy would also strengthen national stability and security.
He called on government officials to prioritise economic reforms, quality education, healthcare and good governance, adding that such measures would help Nigeria enjoy the true dividends of democracy.
