Amnesty International has strongly condemned remarks made by Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), describing them as reckless and dangerous.
The condemnation follows a statement attributed to Wike during a live television appearance, where he said he could have responded to a journalist by shooting.
Amnesty International said such language risks normalising violence, particularly against media professionals.
The organisation warned that comments of this nature could embolden attacks on journalists carrying out their duties.

It also noted that the remarks potentially violate Nigeria’s broadcasting standards, which are overseen by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
Amnesty International described the statement as unlawful and unacceptable, especially coming from a senior government official.
It called on the FCT Minister to immediately withdraw the comment and issue a public apology.
The organisation stressed that public officials have a responsibility to uphold democratic values, including respect for press freedom.
The development has raised broader concerns about the safety of journalists in Nigeria.
Advocates warn that hostile rhetoric from political leaders can contribute to an environment where media practitioners face intimidation or harm.
