Traders in Kano are once again counting their losses after a fresh fire outbreak destroyed dozens of shops, just days after a major inferno rocked Singer Market.
The early-morning fire broke out on Friday at the Fatima Simra Multi-Purpose Market in the Dakata area of the state. The blaze reportedly started around dawn and spread quickly, gutting about 50 shops before help arrived.
Market officials said the fire caught traders completely unprepared, as most shops were still closed at the time. Many of the affected businesses were involved in oil production and plastic recycling, materials that burn easily and helped the fire spread rapidly.
The head of the market’s fire committee explained that emergency agencies were immediately contacted as soon as the flames were noticed. Firefighters were already on their way even as the fire was still burning, offering traders cautious hope.
At the time of reporting, the full extent of the damage had not yet been confirmed, and no casualties had been officially reported. However, goods worth millions of naira are feared lost.
This latest incident has deeply worried residents and business owners across Kano, especially coming shortly after the massive Singer Market fire that destroyed over 1,000 shops. The repeated outbreaks have again raised serious questions about fire safety, prevention measures, and emergency response in busy markets across the state.
