NiMet Unveils 2026 Climate Forecast, Warns of Variable Rainfall

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has unveiled its 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction.

NiMet warned of variable rainfall, prolonged dry spells, a severe August Break, and warmer temperatures nationwide.

However, the agency presented the forecast at the NAF Conference Centre in Abuja.

Government officials, farmers, aviation operators, and disaster managers attended the event.

Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo described the forecast as vital for national planning.

In addition, he said climate variability affects aviation safety, food security, and infrastructure development, reaffirmed federal support for strengthening NiMet’s operations.

NiMet forecast early rainfall onset in Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Benue, and Kogi.

Early onset is also expected in Nasarawa, Oyo, Kebbi, Niger, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Adamawa, and Taraba.

The agency projected late onset in Borno State.

Rainfall may end earlier than normal in Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Imo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Kogi, and Niger.

A delayed cessation is expected in Lagos, Anambra, Enugu, Cross River, Benue, Nasarawa, and Kaduna.

NiMet predicted longer rainy seasons in Lagos, Benue, Enugu, Ebonyi, Ogun, Oyo, and Nasarawa.

Shorter seasons may occur in parts of Borno, Yobe, and Niger.

Above-normal rainfall is expected in Borno, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kaduna, Enugu, Cross River, Abia, Ebonyi, and Akwa Ibom.

Below-normal rainfall may affect Katsina, Zamfara, Kwara, Oyo, and Ogun.

NiMet warned of dry spells exceeding 15 days between March and May in Oyo and Ogun.

Northern and central states may face dry spells of up to 21 days mid-year.

The August Break may start in late July and remain severe in Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, and parts of Oyo.

NiMet predicted warmer daytime and nighttime temperatures in early 2026.
