Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing for high stakes bilateral talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People. The high-profile diplomatic summit occurred just days after the Chinese president hosted US President Donald Trump in the exact same venue.

This rapid succession of superpower visits clearly underscores Beijing’s massive leverage in modern global geopolitics. Xi welcomed Putin with full military honors before entering closed-door sessions to discuss critical energy, tech, and security agreements. The two leaders immediately signed an extension of their historic 25year old friendship and cooperation treaty.

During the opening remarks, Putin warmly referred to Xi as a “dear friend” and praised their unprecedented level of strategic partnership. Russia heavily relies on China as its primary trading partner after facing severe economic sanctions from Western nations over the Ukraine conflict. China currently purchases nearly half of all Russian crude oil exports, keeping Moscow’s economy afloat.

Putin emphasized that Russia remains an absolutely reliable energy provider despite the escalating crisis across the Middle East. Meanwhile, President Xi used the platform to publicly oppose unilateral bullying in international relations, a subtle jab aimed directly at Washington. The Chinese Commerce Ministry also used the summit’s timing to confirm a massive order of 200 Boeing jets, skillfully balancing its delicate ties between Eastern and Western powers.
